Do you think having a capsule wardrobe is crucial or entirely optional when trying to improve your appearance? Does improving mean having a "signature look", or something else? Would you recommend people have one regardless of how necessary it is?

I think it's a good concept if you want to have less "choices", because no matter what you pick in a lot of regards the items will go together (if done properly).

It doesn't hurt but it takes some time to make a proper one.

It's indeed ideal to not buy useless pieces of clothes you will never wear, even if things like Vinted exists, it's still throwing away money.

Having a signature look is ideal because you should wear only clothes you feel confident in it outside and like the style of it, and not trying to force yourself fitting in a niche
