[QOTW #8] Can you be "universally attractive" AND "extremely alternative"?

In a lot of appearance based improvement communities, alternative fashion tends to be turned away or unrecommended. Even if the individual giving the advice enjoys the aesthetic. Comments similar to "I like it but I don't think most other people would, and if your goal is to be more widely appealing, you can't do it," etc. Which makes me wanna ask - can you have both? Or does being alternative itself make it impossible to be appealing to most people? Does it change based on generations or culture/societal norms at the time? etc.
Robert Smith, Peter Steele, Gerard Way, Trent Reznor... Frontmen of many "alternative" bands were the object of wet dreams and fantasies by fangirls because they had the looks to begin with despite their experimental looks. Of course extreme looks like Marilyn Manson's are not universally attractive, but overall fashion and aesthetic don't have much impact on one's appeal/attractiveness if it suits them well, so it's a question of extremes in my opinion.
